A Mostly Accurate History of Disneyland Souvenir Spoons…

Introduction

As there is no 'official' Disney resource or history describing Disneyland souvenir Spoons I’ve put together the following ‘Guide’ as a brief overview of what I've learned about Disneyland Sterling Silver Souvenir spoons

Disneyland Souvenir Spoons... Starting on the back

The first Disneyland Spoons had a  "© 1954 WALT DISNEY PRODUCTIONS" hallmark and the " ASI in a triangle."
Though Disneyland didn't open until 1955 the first souvenir spoons were copyrighted and made in 1954.

The designer and manufacturer are unknown to me but there were at least two 'betas.'

---------------
I’ve only seen two of this first spoon.... I bought them both and am saving them for the grandkids kids! It’s unique because ‘STERLING’ is stamped not raised AND the hallmark is further down the handle…

---------------
The spoon above with the raised ‘STERLING’ was the layout and basic hallmark desigh selected as the 'official' Disneyland Opening Day spoon. This layout, minus '1954' and the 'ASI mark', was used in all future Disneyland Souvenir Spoons

Who was ASI... And what’s with the triangle?

The original Disneyland spoons had both the "©1954 WALT DISNEY PRODUCTIONS" and the American Souvenirs, Inc. "ASI in a triangle" hallmark. Initially ASI had an exclusive contract to sell all Disneyland Souvenirs.
  1. Managing Director
  2. Managing Director
The triangle in the ASI hallmark represents the outline of Disneyland.

---------------

For some reason before Disneyland opened, Disney and ASI had a falling out and ASI lost their contract… Sometime between opening day and mid-1956 the ‘ASI Triangle’ disappeared from all Disney souvenirs.

The “©1954 WALT DISNEY PRODUCTIONS” Hallmark

The "©1954" hallmark was used only on the initial run of spoons made for Disneyland's Grand Opening on July 17, 1955.
After that the hallmark has simply read: “STERLING © WALT DISNEY PRODUCTIONS”

The Spoon Front and Castle design changes over the years…

To my knowledge there have been only three design changes to Disneyland souvenir spoons… They all have to do with the castle gates portcullis. The Sleeping Beauty Castle and the font / layout used for ‘Disneyland’ have remained the same.

---------------
1) The original ©1954 "ASI in triangle" spoon had a 4 X 4 cross hatched portcullis.

---------------
2) From 1954 to early 1970’s all the spoons (except those with the ASI mark) had a 7 X 7 cross hatched portcullis.

---------------
3) Sometime in the 1970’s the design chanced again... The castle gate was opened the cross hatched portcullis was raised.

Different Sizes and Styles

In addition to the most popular 4" Disneyland Souvenir Spoon Disneyland also sold a 5 5/8" spoon as both Teaspoons and as a scalloped sugar spoon and a 4 3/8" and 4 5/8" "Sugar Scoop / Sugar Shovel"
